CrittereX Pest Control eliminates lanternflies across the Hudson Valley. The lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula)
is an invasive planthopper that damages trees, orchards, and vineyards through feeding and honeydew secretion. We target every life stage,
from egg mass through nymph and adult, using our confirmed four-step process.
As part of our full range of pest control services, CrittereX addresses lanternfly activity at every stage of its life cycle. Egg masses overwinter on tree bark, outdoor furniture, and vehicles, then hatch into nymphs each spring. Nymphs appear black with white spots from April through July, then red with black and white markings from July through September, before winged adults emerge in July and remain active through the first hard frost.
Infestation severity depends on host tree proximity and property type. A residential yard near a tree-of-heaven stand faces different pressure than a commercial vineyard. We investigate the actual source of an infestation (egg masses, host trees, and entry points) rather than treating visible adults alone.
Our treatments target the full population across its life cycle, not just the insects visible on a given day. Technicians use professional-grade products and application methods suited to egg masses, nymphs, and adult lanternflies, reducing the population at its source and limiting next season’s hatch. Early-stage nymphs cluster on low vegetation and are easiest to treat before they disperse to tree canopies in later instars. Late-season adults gather on tree trunks and structures in the evening, which changes both the treatment window and the application method we use.
Years of Experiences
Choosing the right wildlife control company makes all the difference. At CrittereX, we combine licensed expertise, eco-friendly solutions, and responsive service to deliver results that last. We don’t rely on harmful chemicals or quick fixes. Instead, we provide comprehensive wildlife management tailored to your property.
We follow a 4-step process for every lanternfly infestation: inspection, planning, treatment, and prevention.
Orchard, vineyard, and other commercial pest control properties follow the same four steps, scaled to the size of the site.
Our technicians inspect the property for egg masses, host trees such as tree-of-heaven, and nymph or adult activity on trunks, canopies, and outdoor furniture.
We develop a treatment plan based on the inspection findings, tailored to the infestation stage and property type, whether residential, orchard, or vineyard.
We apply treatment using regulated, NYS DEC-compliant practices suited to the property and infestation stage identified during inspection.
We provide egg-mass removal guidance and schedule follow-up visits to monitor the property through the next lanternfly season.
We deliver pest control solutions backed by training and hands-on field experience across Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, and Ulster County.
Our technicians stay current on lanternfly management practices and tailor every plan to a property’s structure and risk factors.
Residential yards, working orchards, and commercial vineyards each carry different host-tree density and access requirements, and our plans reflect those differences rather than applying one treatment schedule to every property type.

We eliminate lanternflies at every life stage with a precision, source-focused approach rather than surface-level spraying.

Our prevention plans reduce host-tree pressure and monitor egg-mass activity to limit population growth season over season.

We protect a property's trees, structures, and outdoor living space from lanternfly activity, from tree canopy to ground level.
We stand behind every ant control in Hudson Valley service we perform. We are determined to provide comprehensive checkups, treatment and reliable outcomes.

Lanternflies feed on more than 70 plant species, with a strong preference for tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima). Properties near wooded edges, orchards, and vineyards face higher lanternfly pressure than properties without these host plants nearby. Lanternflies also lay egg masses on non-plant surfaces, including firewood, patio furniture, grills, and vehicles, which spreads infestations between properties that share no host trees at all.

Lanternflies return to a property when egg masses go undetected or when host trees on neighboring properties continue to support the population. A single egg mass contains 30 to 50 eggs, so incomplete removal allows the population to rebuild the following spring.

Lanternflies damage trees and property in three ways. Feeding activity stresses ornamental trees, orchard crops, and vineyard plantings by removing sap the plant needs for growth. Honeydew secretion coats leaves, patios, and vehicles below infested trees. Sooty mold then grows on that honeydew, blackening surfaces and blocking the leaf photosynthesis a stressed tree needs to recover.

A property qualifies for professional lanternfly service when egg-mass counts increase season over season, nymph or adult swarms appear on structures or vehicles, host trees show honeydew and sooty mold buildup, or DIY scraping and sticky bands no longer keep pace with the population.
Sticky bands and manual egg scraping alone rarely stop a lanternfly infestation. Lanternflies migrate from untreated host trees on neighboring properties throughout the season, and a single overlooked egg mass restarts the population the following spring. We combine targeted treatment with seasonal monitoring to address both the current population and next year’s egg masses, rather than resetting the infestation clock with a one-time spray.
Our prevention plans identify host trees on the property, remove accessible egg masses, and establish a monitoring schedule through the lanternfly season. This reduces the population at its source rather than treating adult activity as it appears. Plans cover residential yards, orchard rows, vineyard plantings, and commercial landscaping, since each property type carries different host-tree density and treatment needs.
Lanternfly pressure returns each season without ongoing management. Our prevention plans combine seasonal monitoring, host-tree management, and follow-up treatment to keep a property’s population below the threshold that causes visible tree and structure damage. Consistent management across multiple seasons produces more stable results than single-visit treatment, since egg masses laid one season determine next spring’s population size.

Treatment duration depends on infestation severity and property size. A single visit addresses most residential infestations; properties with extensive host trees, orchard or vineyard acreage, or heavy egg-mass counts require additional visits spaced across the lanternfly season.
Yes. We use family- and pet-safe products and application techniques for every lanternfly treatment.
A lanternfly infestation shows 4 common signs:
Large numbers of adults gathering on tree trunks in late summer and early fall are one of the clearest signs of an established infestation.
Lanternfly control targets the current population and accessible egg masses, which minimizes reinfestation. Regional lanternfly pressure from neighboring untreated properties means follow-up visits and seasonal monitoring reduce recurrence more effectively than a single treatment. We don’t guarantee zero future activity, since lanternflies remain an active, migrating invasive species across the Hudson Valley.
Yes. We offer ongoing protection plans that include seasonal lanternfly monitoring as part of year-round pest management.
